Operation Find a Church: Part II

On Saturday, Horrible Warning called me to tell me about how her mom was guilt tripping her about not going to church. Her mom sent her the link to several churches that were having services - however, they were all Episcopal churches and I couldn't visit one of those without Flutter so we decided to try something new.

We went to a Presbyterian church. The church itself was one that I had passed fairly often and always thought it was pretty (if not a little dated). Our original plan was to attend the sunrise service, but, did you know that the sun rises at 6:30 a.m.?! Uh, so no. No 6:30 service. We went to the 8:30 one. And we were one of about 10 people who were not over 100 years old.

The church has an AMAZING choir. There were probably 30-40 people and the music was FABULOUS. There was lots of singing. And lots of standing and sitting and oh! time to stand again. No, sit down. And I kept thinking, they really need one of those applause signs like they have at the tapings of Jerry Springer - except to say sit! and stand! Or, "you respond now"

About that - the program for the service showed pretty much what the church leader said, and then had lines that the congregations were supposed to respond with. It was all very drama rehearsal-y, but the overall service was okay. Like I said, I loved the music. And they did a little activity with the children where they got to decorate a cross with flowers.

Overall, I didn't really like the message. It was semi-boring and it was hard to follow. I really liked the last church's program where it had notes and they were "life keys" and stuff that they focused on.

Next week Flutter and I are trying the pretty Baptist church downtown. Wish us luck!

i did like the notes and his emphasis on certain parts of the message. i'm listening to pastor dr. phil's sermon right now, and depending on how the program is and if there are places to take notes, it might be hard to follow as well. :P

You should try a Mormon church. ha ha! At least you'd have something to blog about (and hey! We have a lot of potlucks).

Best of luck with finding a church you love. I think it's great that you're taking the time to explore different faiths.

I'm not sure what type of church you are looking for, but I go to a Science of Mind church. Its less like a religion and more like a philosophy. Its based on the teachings of Ernest Holmes and has a more metaphysical feel to it. I don't usually bring it up, but since you mentioned (blogged) that you were looking at churches, I thought I'd share. It's the first not scary church I have ever found. You can google it if you are interested. (or email me) Good luck with your search.

Good thing you didn't mention the Springer sign to me during the service. You might have been asked never to visit that House of the Lord again.

I'm still surprised there weren't many more Easter hats. Seriously, I thought old churchgoers loved that stuff...

Good music is really important in a church for me, since my people (the Lutherans) like to sing! But I think good preaching is even more important. What's the point of going to church if you're just going to fall asleep during the sermon?
